The Federal Public Defender’s Office exists solely to provide legal assistance to people who are facing criminal charges (or potential charges) in federal court, and who are unable to afford a lawyer to represent them. The expenses of this office, as well as your attorney’s salary, are paid by the federal government. Your attorney’s loyalty, however, is to you, and to you alone.

The attorney who is assigned your case specializes in defending people charged with the commission of federal crimes. Your attorney will defend you to the fullest extent of the law. You will probably have many questions. Your attorney will be able to provide you with answers to those questions and to tell you how the law applies to your specific case. Please click the More Information link below for additional details about our office and the federal legal process.

Individuals who are charged with a federal crime and detained pending trial or sentencing are generally housed in county jails within the district. Please find links to the most common facilities for each division below.

If an individual is convicted and sentenced to federal prison, they will be housed in one of the Bureau of Prisons’ (BOP) facilities. To look up an individual currently housed in a BOP facility, please visit the BOP Inmate Locator site. For a list of all BOP facilities, please visit the BOP’s website.
